R.A.C.E.
Race is not just the color of our skin
It’s an acronym, R.A.C.E. a social construct we all live within.
R is for religion which we are born into but still free to choose:
We may be raised Christian while being Jews,
born into a Muslim family and convert to Hinduism or identify as Agnostic but practice Buddhism.
A religion that’s also an ethnicity is Judaism.
A is for allegiance as in nationality — of the same band.
If we are born in America, no matter the color of our skin, we are American.
We can move to another country and change our nationality which means “of the same nation”
but we cannot change our ethnicity “of the same blood” — our DNA creation.
C is for cultural identity, like religion, or nationality, this is our choice.
We can change our gender, and pronouns, and give rise to our true voice.
Maybe we’re Asian but feel more culturally aligned with a Latin identity,
It’s not cultural appropriation to be seen for who we know ourselves to be.
E is for ethnicity: our hair, our features, our melanin.
People tan or use makeup to change the color of their skin.
The same identity marker used to discriminate is also used to try and fit in.
If the definition of “race” is, “All people: human,”
when we ask others, “What race are you?” are we implying less than?
Race is not just the color of our skin
It’s an acronym, R.A.C.E. a social construct we all live within.
R. Religion.
A. Allegiance.
C. Culture.
E. Ethnicity.
